HARO Tournament
Judge Registration

Welcome! This is the Judges database where Officials register for Houston Regional ("HARO") tournament.

Judges are family of team members, teachers, professionals or members of the Community who offer to serve in order to make our tournaments possible. For this, we THANK YOU.

Coaches cannot sign up to be judges. Coaches should not sign-up on behalf of their judge.

Here are some tips to fill in the form below:

What problem/group will you judge?

Under "Job Preference", select a problem OTHER than the one your child/relative is in. Do not select the problem of the team you represent because this can be interpreted as a conflict of interest by other teams. For reference, here are the typical Problem categories:
#1 is always a Vehicle Problem.
      #2 is a Technical Problem.
      #3 is about the Classics.
#4 is the Balsa wood building.
      #5 is the humoristic Problem.
Score Room is neutral and can work for anyone. You are expected to bring your own laptop to install our scoring software and do data entry.
Judging Spontaneous problem is great fun and can also work for anyone. Must be quick to keep up with their answers!
Do not select "Administrative" or "Primary".
Selecting a judging area is just a preference. Your final assignment will be judge before problem-specific Judge Training, after you take the general training; we will balance all the registered judges agains the needs of the competition.

Please do not be intimidated by a process that is unfamiliar. At Judges Training, you will be given information on how to break it down into small components. Each judging team looks at specific aspects of the problem.

The second list indicates your preference in judging position. If this is your first time, it is okay to select "No preference".

Are you representing a team?
This is where a team gets credit for the judge. If you do not select it, the team cannot get credit.
Community judges who are not affiliated with a specific team can add the word "Community" in the comments box and the name of your friend, colleague, employer who referred you. You can be a Community judge even if you choose to provide credit to a team.

Do you have any children/relatives competing?
This is what helps you identify any additional problems you cannot judge, in order to avoid conflicts of interest.

Please specify in the Comments box if you need educational (TAGT), professional or volunteer certification for employer, education, military, etc.

After you fill in the next section and click on “Next Step”, there will be a green box where you must repeat your email before you finalize your registration. Beware, it is not always visible if you are using a smart-phone.

 Comment:

By agreeing to be a judge, I affirm that I am 18+ yrs old and I am NOT a coach or co-coach; I will not participate or assist in preparation of any team meetings until the end of the current tournament season (after the World Finals competition). I understand that I must commit to TWO, possibly THREE Saturdays:

  1. The video conferenced Judges Training session on February 3rd (3 to 5 pm) OR make-up on February 17th, 2024 (3 to 5 pm)
  2. The Regional competition February 24th, 2024 (full day), and
  3. The State competition on March 23rd, 2024 (full day) in Denton, TX, if your team advances.
This is a required participation for judges representing teams who advance to the State tournament.
Judges who represent teams that do not advance and Community Judges are also welcome and encouraged to participate in the State competition as well. The travel reimbursement policy applies equally.

There are pre-requisites to take the General judge training on your own (video), then the certification test. You will receive conference information for your specific group by email 2 days before yoru Judge Training session.

A make-up session (Feb 17th) is available but has limited space and scope. After you register, contact houstonjudge@txodyssey.org to rsvp for the specific session. Or enter the make-up date in the comment box.

Job-sharing is not allowed across competitions. Judge duties at the Region and State tournaments may begin as early as 7 am and end as late as 5 pm.

I understand that once I am trained, I am committed to judge since a replacement cannot be trained after Judges Training. I understand that I MUST NOT share judge materials or thoughts with any team members, parents or coaches, even after the regional competitions.

I understand and agree with the above terms and conditions.(e)
