Webster Hill Odyssey of Mind team invited to world finals

WEST HARTFORD -- The Odyssey of the Mind Team from Webster Hill Elementary School in West Hartford took second place at the statewide Odyssey of the Mind Competition in Bethel. The team -- Lucas Pauluk, Michaela Clark, Dylan Mallinson, Mia Seymour, Shibe Couchman, Ananya Alleyne and Andres Ariza, all third graders from Webster Hill Elementary School -- competed against 15 schools from through out Connecticut.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program for students K-12 and college. Odyssey provides teams with the opportunity to learn creative problem solving, teamwork, brainstorming, self-reliance and respect for individual strengths -- unique, unforgettable experiences that will serve them in every aspect of their lives now and in the future.

The team put their heads together to solve a challenge from Odyssey of the Mind. Their challenge was to create and present a humorous performance where a food item is accused of being unhealthy and must defend itself among its food peers. All characters are food items and will include "the accused," "the accuser," a jury that is not portrayed by team members, and additional team-created characters. The jury will reveal its decision to the audience.

The team has been invited to compete in the World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., May 26 to 29, against more than 125 teams from around the county and the world. They are the only team from West Hartford invited to the World Finals and will be representing our town at this worldwide event.

The team, however, has yet to solve a funding problem at home. Webster Hill's Odyssey of the Mind team is facing hefty travel and lodging expenses to attend the contest at Michigan State University. Those interested in sponsoring the team may contact Eric Mallinson at eric.mallinson@comcast.net or (860) 561-2673 or check out the team blog at http://webhillom.worldpress.com for fundraising events that will take place.
