Sanford High School teams raising funds for 'Odyssey' world championship
SANFORD -- Sanford High School's two "Odyssey of the Mind" teams have qualified to advance to the program's world championship at Michigan State University at the end of May.
The students will be raising funds during the next few weeks in order to be able to attend the event. Kristen Wiegand, a parent who is assisting with the fundraising, said approximately $12,000 will be needed in order for both teams to make the trip.
Six upcoming fundraising events include:
-- Beginning Saturday, April 10, the students will be "Showering with Flowers." For a $10 donation, you can shower a friend with flowers -- pinwheels on their lawn. Bouquets of pinwheels will be placed on the lawn of residents and business owners in the Sanford area. Please contact Kristen Wiegand at 608-1620 to request a "flower shower" for yourself or a friend.
-- A "Teens Only Night" will be held at Sports Fitness Zone on Route 4 on Saturday, April 10. For $10, high school students who attend will be able to play wallyball, racquetball and basketball, work out in the gym, play in a Texas Hold 'Em tournament, bring a musical instrument and jam with friends, enjoy refreshments and take a chance of winning gift certificates. All proceeds will go to Sanford High School's "Odyssey of the Mind" teams. Sports Fitness Zone is sponsoring the event, which will last from 6 p.m. to midnight.
-- A "Rock and Glow" bowling event will take place at the Bowl-A-Rama at 1217 Main Street on Sunday, April 18, from 8 to 10 p.m. The $10 admission will cover two hours of bowling and the shoes. There also will be a bake sale, raffles and pizza. This event is being sponsored by the Bowl-A-Rama.
-- There will be a car wash at the Springvale First Baptist Church at 429 Main Street on Saturday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For a donation, you can get your vehicle washed and support the "Odyssey of the Mind" teams.
-- A bottle drive will be held on Saturday, May 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students from both teams will be driving throughout Sanford and collecting returnable bottles and cans from homes. Please call Bill or Nicole Leonard at 324-4741 to let organizers know where you live before May 1, so they can arrange for a team member to stop by.
-- A pancake breakfast will be held at Applebee's at the Center for Shopping on Route 109 on Saturday, May 15, from 8 to 10 a.m. If interested in attending, please call Bill and Nicole Leonard at 324-4741, or Kristen Wiegand at 608-1620 to get your tickets early.
Both SHS teams competed in the recent state "Odyssey of the Mind" competition that Sanford hosted on Saturday, March 20.
The "Food Court" team is comprised of Bryan Levangie, Kourtney Wiegand, Sarah Calnan, Keziah Flynn, Jenny Supinski, and Sophie Tremblay, with Ruby Levangie and Kristen Wiegand as coaches. The "Nature Trail'R" team includes Patricia Leonard, Victoria Leonard, Tristan White, Lauren Sawyer, and Taylor Zuk, with Nicole and William Leonard as coaches.
