Loudoun Teams Head to Odyssey World Finals

Students from several Loudoun County Public Schools will heading to East Lansing, MI, to compete in the the 2010 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals from May 26 - 29 following strong performances at the state competition last weekend.

Students from Harper Park Middle School, Mercer Middle School, Horizon Elementary School, Hutchison Farm Elementary School, Selden's Landing Elementary School and Little River Elementary School all placed in the top 3 in various categories.

Students from Mercer took first place in the "Return to the Gift of Flight" Division II competition, in which they designed and flew several miniature aircraft while completing a number of challenges including dropping an object on a target and mass launching multiple aircraft. Students from Horizon Elementary took home second place in the Division I category of the same competition, as well as taking second in the "Column Structure" Division I competition, designed a structure of balsa wood columns to withstand a stress test.

Little River Elementary students also took first place in the "Food Court" challenge, defending a food item against accusations of being unhealthy by its peers, with team members taking on a number of roles during the debate.

Selden's Landing students took second place in the "Nature Trail'R" Division I competition. The students designed a human-powered vehicle and camper which they navigated down a nature trail, overcoming obstacles and helping clean the environment along the way.

Students from Harper Park took home first place in the "Discovered Treasures" Division II competition with two original performances based on the discovery of archeological treasures. One performance was based on the discover of an actual historical artifact, while the other portrayed an archeological team of the future discovering a modern day sculpture or structure.

Hutchison Farm Elementary students tied for third place in the Division I "Food Court" challenge.
