Students are challenged in a state-wide competition.

Odyssey Of The Mind finals were held Saturday at Binghamton University.

It's a problem-solving event where students compete against each other in three age groups.

This high school group had to build small wooden columns, and tested how much weight the columns could hold.

One student says the competition has helped her prepare for the future.

"I've used this as college essays. Odyssey of the Mind has really helped me with everything. I've become more of a leader, normally when I was younger I was really shy and now I have to lead, so that helped me out a lot," said Molly Witter with the York Central School team.

The York Central School team balanced more than 600 pounds on their columns.

Volunteer judges decide the winning teams based on creativity and completion of the task.

The winners will go on to the finals at Michigan State in May.
