Goshen students win Odyssey of the Mind

Goshen — The team from Goshen Intermediate School won Division I in the Food Court category in the Odyssey of the Mind Competition held last Saturday at Orange Ulster BOCES in Goshen.

Monroe-Woodbury Middle School won Division II and Warwick High School won Division III in that category.

The students had to create and present a humorous performance in which a food item is accused of being unhealthy and must defend itself among its food peers. All characters are food items and include “the accused,” “the accuser,” a jury not portrayed by team members, and additional team-created characters.

Odyssey of the Mind is an academic competition that calls on students to demonstrate their creativity and skill in solving problems ranging from building mechanical devices to interpreting literary classics. They bring their solutions to competitions held on the local, state, and world levels.

Goshen’s proudest moment came in 2009, when students who had first teamed up in middle school not only made it to the world finals as high school seniors, but won. The intermediate school team is carrying on Goshen’s long tradition of excelling at Odyssey competitions.
