Goshen Odyssey of the Mind team wins with 'Superstitions'

GOSHEN X The Goshen High School Odyssey of the Mind team took first place in the Division III "Superstitions" category April 4 at the New York State Competition at SUNY Binghamton.

The team will advance to the World Finals in Ames, Iowa, on May 27.

Team members, now seniors, have been working together since they were freshmen, when they also competed at the state level. The team's success is largely because of their creative solution for the problem "Superstitions."

During their eight-minute performance, team members had to incorporate two known superstitions and make up one of their own. They also had to create a two-person costume with as many creative materials as possible.

The team's biggest challenge was creating a set that would transform into an entirely different set X without anything being hidden.

Essentially, they had to build a new set during their performance.

In their "Superstitions" skit, a Superstition Spreading Virus, played by Kiersten Ellefsen, invades the body and tricks the Chimney Sweep, played by Ryan Kish, and the Double Helix, played by Katie MacDonald and Rachel Jordan, with made-up superstitions. As the body becomes ill, Medula, played by Maddie Laskoski, and the White Blood Cells, played by Alex Finkelstein and Sara Laskoski, rush to stop the spread of the virus.
