By John Maguire

Five talented young ladies from the Jefferson Village School are going to Baltimore for the 29th Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, where they could compete against an expected 17,000 students from all over the world.

Jefferson's "Division 1 Tee Structure team," won the Maine State Championships at Cony High School April 5. The team was given three challenges in competition with schools from across the state. The challenges included dancing, constructing models and solving problems on the fly. To win the competition, the JVS team made a structure out of balsa wood that held up to 40 pounds.

According to Jefferson coach Kathleen Peabody, the team, made up of third, fourth and fifth grade students, are excited that they won the state competition and are looking forward to their trip.

"They did it on their own& no help from me," Peabody said. "It's exciting, because it's an academic achievement."

Odyssey of the Mind is a worldwide educational program open to students ranging from grade school to college levels. Through the Odyssey of the Mind program, students learn to creatively solve problems stemming from many topics including physics, literature and art.

This year the World Finals will be held at the University of Maryland between May 31 and June 4. While in Baltimore, the JVS team will compete against with teams from as far away as Singapore.
