Three local teams qualify for world finals

Three local Odyssey of the Mind teams have driven and laughed their way to the world finals.
Students from Truscott Elementary School and Berthoud and Mountain View high school teams qualified during a state competition Saturday to compete in this year's World Competition May 31-June 3 in College Park, Md.
Odyssey of the Mind is a competition in which teams of students use creativity to solve out-of-the-box challenges, competing at the regional, state and national levels.
Both the Truscott Elementary and Berthoud High School teams competed in their respective age categories in the Road Rally division, driving a team-built vehicle through a road rally with four sports-event-related checkpoints.
The Mountain View High School team competed in the Eccentrics challenge, creating an original comedy about three misfits who solve an Earth-related problem.
Danel Lins, the Thompson School District's gifted education parent liaison and enrichment coordinator, said that although the district pays for the teams' entry fees, each team must raise money to make the trip to Maryland.
"I wish we could help pay for it, but it is an expensive and time-intensive commitment," Lins said.
The coaches and team members will be making the decision whether or not to go on to finals this week or early next week, Lins said.
