WF 2010

Odyssey teams received a Spartan's welcome at the 2010 World Finals in East Lansing, Michigan. This is the second time World Finals has been held at Michigan State University and it was very successful with over 750 teams and 450 volunteers.

During Opening Ceremonies this year's Creativity Award winner, Willard Wigan, inspired all with his art. He struggled with dyslexia growing up and used his creativity to overcome it by becoming a successful artist -- known world-wide for his micro-sculptures that often fit in the eye of the needle. He unveiled his newest creation, an intricate OMER sculpture (pictured below). A special exhibit of his work was on display during World Finals. Wigan was also inspired by Odyssey teams throughout the event and said, "I wish I could shrink every one of you and take you with me, I love you all!"

At the conclusion of a high-energy Opening Ceremonies teams anxiously waited for four of the most anticipated words spoken by Dr. Sam, "Let the games begin!"

The energy continued throughout World Finals as teams competed, made new friends from around the world, and participated in the many special activities offered. Jenison Feildhouse was filled with teams and supporters attending the Creativity Festival, where NASA unveiled its newest attraction, a huge tent in the shape of a globe. NASA has become an important part of World Finals over the past 10 years of sponsorship.

While Odyssey teams made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime, they also competed in the most challenging creative competition in the world. China had the most championship teams with five, followed by Pennsylvania with three. New York and Poland each had two teams and finally North Carolina, Michigan, Hong Kong, Virginia, Singapore, California, and Florida each had one first place team. Of course, all teams that solved an Odyssey problem are considered winners!
