NEW LOTHROP -- Teams from Chesaning, Corunna and New Lothrop schools Saturday won spots in the Odyssey of the Mind state championship competition during the regional meet at New Lothrop High School.
The teams, representing elementary, middle school and high school levels in three divisions will compete in the state finals April 16 at Davenport College in Grand Rapids.
In all, 11 area teams advanced to the state meet of the team-based problem-solving competition. The Region 5 tournament for eastern Michigan also saw teams from Flint, Howell, Grand Blanc, Farmington Hills, Brighton and Harrison Township advance.
The top two teams in each division and for each problem advance.
Odyssey teams are scored on how well they solve a problem that they must write a script for and present a skit, build their problem-solving structures and complete the solution within a time limit. They also receive style points based on costumes and other criteria.
In addition, a second portion scores teams on how well they solve unplanned problems that are presented separately. The point totals are then combined.
In "Extreme Mousemobiles" Division 1, Corunna's Elsa Meyer team was second to Flint's Randels Elementary. Randels scored 328.89 and Corunna had 317.41. The problem required teams to use spring-type mouse traps to provide power for model cars and other items.
In Division 2, Corunna Middle School was first with 345.06 points and New Lothrop totaled 337.24.
In Division 3, New Lothrop High School won with 350 points and Corunna was second with 227.94.
In "As good as gold" Division 1, Corunna's Nellie Reed team posted 350 points to advance. Chesaning High School won Division 3 with 350 points.
The problem involved writing a humorous skit.
