Tewksbury 'Odyssey of the Mind' team in state finals

TEWKSBURY TWP. -- Old Turnpike School's "Odyssey of the Mind" team took first place at the 2010 Liberty Regional Tournament on Saturday, March 13 at Crossroads Middle School in Monmouth Junction.

The team will now advance to the state competition this month.

The original team members -- Connor Uzzo, Michael Fabiano, and Andrew Fabiano -- were joined by Nicholas Ross and Ethan Tyler, to form the winning team.

The team was challenged to build a human-powered vehicle that could be driven though a team-created nature trail. While driving on the trail, the vehicle was required to beautify or clean up the environment, encounter wildlife, overcome an obstacle, and suffer a breakdown and then be repaired.

In addition to these challenges, the team had to build a camper which could transform into another object.

The team began working on this problem in October, using primarily recycled materials. The final product cost less than $100 to build.

"Odyssey of the Mind" is a worldwide organization which promotes creative thinking and original problem solving from students in kindergarten through college years. The students solve problems with no adult assistance and learn to work as a team.

If the Old Turnpike School team places at the state finals, which will be held at Sampson G. Smith Middle School in Somerset on Saturday, April 17, it will go on to compete in the "Odyssey of the Mind" 2010 World Finals set to take place at Michigan State University, May 26-29.
