M-W High School captures a first place at Odyssey of the Mind state tourney

Victory gives the team a place at world finals at Michigan State University

CENTRAL VALLEY - A team representing Monroe-Woodbury High School won first-place honors in last weekend's Odyssey of the Mind New York State Tournament at SUNY Binghamton, earning members the right to participate at the world finals at Michigan State University at the end of May.

The team was one of five Monroe-Woodbury teams which won their respective divisions and problems at the regional competition held in February at Orange-Ulster BOCES in Goshen.

The world finals will feature teams traveling from as far away as China to participate in the international competition which emphasizes ingenuity, creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

"Odyssey is successful because it engages students in collaborative problem-solving while also giving them the chance to explore their imaginations and express their unique creativity," said Debra Garling, the district's Odyssey of the Mind coordinator.

The high school team presented its solution to the "Discovered Treasures" problem, capturing the attention of Odyssey of the Mind founder Dr. Sam Micklus, who attended the state finals.

According to Garling, Micklus "was in awe of their sets, costumes, performance and solution to this classical problem."

Immediately following their performance, Micklus spent a long time with the team, admiring the sets, asking questions and congratulating the team.

Garling praised the creative efforts of the four other participating teams. One of the middle school teams, which focused on the "Food Court" problem, placed fourth out of 19 teams.

A second middle school team performed its solution to "Discovered Treasures." Both the North Main and Central Valley elementary teams were made up of mostly first-time Odyssey participants "who displayed impressive team collaboration," added Garling.

Watch for a follow-up on the first-place high school team in next week's Photo News.
