The 'Mind' set More than 700 students invaded Sanford on Saturday for the state Odyssey of the Mind competition. A variety of challenges aimed at making kids think "outside the box" featured submarines and sombreros, flying feathers and stressed structures. But most important, there was creativity. Elementary school, middle school and high school teams competed in several categories. The vehicle/mechanical category, called "Nature Trail'R," required each team to design and build a human-powered vehicle that could overcome obstacles on a camping trip. The technical device category, "Return to the Gift of Flight," involved creating aircraft that could complete flight plans. The balsa wood competition, "Column Structure," looked at which team's creation involving columns could support the most weight. The two performance problems were "Discovered Treasures," which centered around archaeological finds, and "Food Court," humorous performances that involved jury trials for foods accused of being unhealthful. | More Articles | |
