Two NL Odyssey of the Mind teams qualify for Michigan State Finals


NEW LOTHROP - Two teams from New Lothrop Schools competed at the Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition held at New Lothrop High School. Odyssey of the Mind is an international problemsolving competition for students of all ages. The team from New Lothrop High School, along with the team from New Lothrop Elementary School earned the right to advance to the Michigan State Finals by placing first or second at the Regional Competition.

A Division 2 team representing New Lothrop Elementary School solved the long-term problem, "Column Structure" and earned a first place finish. The team was required to design and build balsa wood columns that function together to balance and support as much weight as possible. The New Lothrop Elementary School team members are Maelin Wheeler, Ben Harnish, Jane Shanfelt, Katie Forsyth, Bayli Malone, and Roen Wheeler. The students are in the sixth through eighth grades. David and Kelley Harnish coach the team.

The New Lothrop High School Division 3 team that solved the long-term problem, "Return to The Gift of Flight" earned a 2nd place finish. The team was required to design and build a series of aircraft to complete 6 flight plans. The team's performance included a humorous look at fads across generations. The New Lothrop High School team members are Cody Loll, Katie VanHorn, Kayla Bila, Emily Mann, Courtney Bila, and Josh Reinhart. The students are in the ninth through tenth grade. Denny and Dianne Henige coach the team.

The 30th annual Michigan Odyssey of the Mind State Finals will be held April 17 at Davenport University in Grand Rapids. Over 140 teams will compete at the State Finals for the title of Odyssey of the Mind State Champion. The top teams at the State Finals will earn the right to compete at the Odyssey of the Mind World Championships which will be held May 26 V 29 at Michigan State University.
