Oakton Elementary Odyssey of the Mind Team Takes Top Area Honor

This March, a team of fourth and fifth graders from Oakton Elementary School came in first place in the NovaWest regional Odyssey of the Mind tournament. The team advanced to the state finals in Newport News where they used imagination and teamwork to solve problems using their creativity. Oakton's team created a performance depicting the discovery of two historic treasures. They presented a comedic version of two explorers, "Clueless and Lark" discovering an Egyptian tomb and portrayed, as a musical, a futuristic "re-discovery" of the Empire State Building. At the state tournament, Oakton's team received third place among Virginia's regional winners.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that emphasizes teamwork and encourages the creative thinking process for students of all ages, Kindergarten through college. Teams solve problems that range from building devices to creating a performance based on a specific theme. Teams bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
