10 area schools send Odyssey of the Mind teams to World Finals

LONGMONT -- Teams from 10 area schools will be going to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals this May in Ames, Iowa.

The teams qualified at Saturday's state tournament, which was held at Silver Creek High School. To make the world competition, a team had to finish at least second in one of five categories.

"OM," as its participants call it, requires a mix of theatrics and engineering to win. Teams are given problems to solve that may involve creating a skit, making a vehicle, or building a structure that can hold several hundred pounds.

This year's qualifiers from the Longmont and Loveland areas in each problem are:

• Alexander Dawson School, Lafayette, first place for Division 2 in "Earth Trek."

• Carbon Valley Secondary Academy, Frederick, first place for Division 2 in "Shock Waves."

• Longmont Christian School, first place for Division 3 in "Teach Your Creature" and for division 1 in "Shock Waves."

• Lyons Middle/Senior High School, first place for Division 3 in "Superstition."

• Mary Blair Elementary, Loveland, first place for Division 1 in "Teach Your Creature."

• St. John the Baptist School, Team A, first place for Division 1 in "Earth Trek."

• Sunset Middle School, first place for Division 2 in "The Lost Labor of Heracles" and second place for division 2 in "Earth Trek."

• Truscott Elementary School, Loveland, second place in Division 1 for "Superstition."

• Turner Middle School, Berthoud, first place for Division 3 in "The Lost Labor of Heracles" and second place for division 3 in "Superstition."

• Westview Middle School, second place for Division 2 in "Shock Waves."
