Visitors bureau tracks spending in Des Moines
The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau officials say that for every 100 people that visit Greater Des Moines, $25,000 is poured into the local economy.
Here are some examples of major dollars coming into Greater Des Moines through the convention and visitors bureau:
In 2009, Des Moines is hosting AAU Wrestling Folkstyle World Wrestling Championships, Iowa FFA Association Leadership Conference and American Public Works Association North American Snow Conference. These three new conventions/events bring in over 14,000 people to Des Moines, use 5,247 hotel rooms and generate approximately $1.5 million in hotel, food, transportation and entertainment revenue (according to Business Travel News).
Ames will host Odyssey of the Mind in May, bringing in 12,000 people that will use 4,000 rooms in Greater Des Moines and Ames area hotels.
In July, the USSSA Girls Fast pitch World Series 11:U and 13:U and the AAU Junior Olympic Games are expected to bring in a total of 57,000 people and over 33,000 room nights.
The Farm Progress Show, booked August of 2010 in Boone, will utilize 7,000 room nights.
The American Mock Trial Association had met in Des Moines from 1985-2006. They are back in Des Moines this year, after spending the last two years in other communities. Attendance in April was 800 students using 750 room nights.
The American Volkssport Association convention will be held in Des Moines in 2011with expected attendance of 1,000.
