Odyssey of the Mind teams succeed at state competition

Newport, Ark. -
Two Newport High School teams took home state titles this past weekend from the Arkansas Odyssey of the Mind state competition. The two teams also earned trips to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition being hosted by Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Newport was also well represented by two additional teams which finished in third place in their problems and divisions.

The Newport High School team coached by Brent Miller won their Earth Trek vehicle problem. This problem requires teams to design and build a small vehicle that will visit four locations. The locations will be different places within one or more team-determined environments. Each time the vehicle leaves a location it will look different in appearance, and after leaving one of the locations it will appear to be a group of vehicles that are traveling together. The team's performance will incorporate the visits to the locations, the environments, and the changes in appearance of the vehicle. The team members included Hannah Ray, Alyson Rohlfing, Brett Bowen, Madolyn Statler, Tegan Martin, and Molly Goyne.

The next Newport High School team earning a trip to World Finals was coached by Craig and Sherri Rohlfing. The team created a humorous performance about a mechanical creature that acts like a real mammal or bird and learns lessons. The creature had to act like the real animal by performing tasks the way it would, including traveling, eating, and turning its head. It was to be taught two lessons by a Creature Teacher and had to "accidentally" learn a behavior by observing others. During the performance the creature was required to surprise the audience by demonstrating the "accidental" behavior it learned. Team members include: Alyson Rohlfing, Evan Rohlfing, Xylina Marshall, Abby Ratton, Jessica Camp, and Harrison Boyce.

Two other Newport OotM teams competed in the state competition. Both teams solved the Superstitions problem. The problem was to create and present a performance that included two documented superstitions, an original superstition created by the team, and the events that caused the original superstition to come to be. The performance also included a funny narrator, a costume that was worn by two or more team members at the same time, and a stage set. During the performance the same stage set items were to be used to change from one setting to another. Both teams placed third in their respective divisions. The team members for the Newport High School team are: Dalton Conditt, Jacob Condit, Katlyn Shumate, Abbey Jones, Lexie Avance, John Mark Robison, and Allissa Smith. The Albright Elementary team members were: Zach Altom, Lacy Schulz, Macy Grady, Maddie Driver, Rachel Gansz, and Bailey Clark.

The Odyssey of the Mind World Final competition will be held from May 27 through May 30. The Newport teams will be conducting fund raisers over the next month to help pay for their trip.
