Odyssey teams advance to state finals
Two Sewickley-area teams won first place in their division at a regional Odyssey of the Mind competition on Saturday, March 3.
Coached by Paul Gould, an Edgeworth fourth grade team of Mattias Cooper, Michael Falcone, Addison Gould, Lexie Meanor, Julia Poppen-berg, Jack Regueiro, and Mira Reitmeyr won first place with their solution to a complex engineering problem that exceeded the performance of some middle school teams at the same competition.
Coached by Ed Green and co-coached by Matthew Sevcik, a multi-school team
of third graders from Edgeworth Elementary, Osborne Elementary and Montessori Children's Community -- Justin Green, Jacob Martin,
Jacob Mosholder, Olivia Sevcik, Moriah Wigley, Cole Wolf and Jack Woodburn -- won first place in their division for their technically inventive solution to a problem that required them to create a vehicle and a system for remotely applying tags to it.
Working over several months, participants in divisions from kindergarten through college learn how to think critically and creatively, how to devise non-obvious approaches for overcoming obstacles and how to work as a team.
Both teams will advance to the state Odyssey of the Mind competition in Altoona on April 14.
The first and second teams in each division following the state competition will qualify for the World Finals to be held in Michigan in May.
