Schools tackle Odyssey Saturday

Staff Report

The Odyssey of the Mind regional competition will be Saturday at the Hunt Union at the State University College at Oneonta, organizers said.

Erika Kwasnik, director for the region's Odyssey of the Mind, said that last year, more than 400 people attended the competition where student teams compete against each other by applying creative problem-solving skills to various tasks.

"It's all about creativity," Kwasnik said.

This year, there are 54 teams consisting of seven students each, she said.

There are almost 30 school districts participating, including Afton, Worcester, Milford, Norwich, Oneonta, Sidney, Oxford and Cooperstown.

Odyssey of the Mind competitions are held on local, regional, state and worldwide levels, Kwasnik said.

"A lot of planning goes into an event like this," she said. Planning meetings have been held since last June.

The teams are judged by a panel of seven volunteer judges who are trained for the event, Kwasnik said.

"We're always looking for volunteers," she said.

First-place winners and a second-place team from the 16 regional competitions around New York will participate in the state competition March 31 in Binghamton. The winners of that competition will go on to the world finals May 23 at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
