| We received many post-event comments from World Finals participants. Here are some of our favorites: |
Here's an interesting story from David B. Bennett of
Mechanicsville, Virginia:
"Another team member's family and ours came in early to do
a little exploring before the competition. We went to the Phoenix
gold mine in Idaho City, just south of Boulder. We all took the
tour down into the mind shaft.
"About half way down the tour guide stopped at this old
bucket. He called it the ‘Lucky Bucket.’ It was used to raise the
gold from down lower in the shaft. Above it was an article about
Miss Colorado visiting the mine, touching the Lucky Bucket and
going on to win the Miss America pageant. Next to that article
was another about an Odyssey of the Mind team that visited the
mine, touched the Lucky Bucket and went on to become World
Champions. They competed the last time Odyssey of the Mind
held World Finals in Boulder. Needless to say, all seven of us
touched the Lucky Bucket."
"Note: Wouldn’t you know it? This team placed first in The
Ostrich Factor. Luck may have played a part, but it takes hard
work, dedication and teamwork to become World Champs. The
team is laminating an article about their win and sending it to the
Phoenix mine to be posted next to the other article.

"The judges and other people involved in The Ostrich
Factor were the perfect role models for all volunteers . . .
I have never seen such wonderful support and people
who deal with children with such energy and delight."

From J.D. Villarreal, a parent:
"Our teams from Rio Grande City and La Grulla, Texas, had
a time of their life at Worlds . . . You cannot imagine what it
meant not only to our children but to the whole community,
county, and region, not to mention the State, coming from next to
the poorest county in the U.S. according to census reports. Seeing
their pictures in the news media has a tremendous positive
impact, especially in their classrooms. Our children grow up
thinking they can never be successful at anything, with such bad
publicity that is given to our area. Knowing they can compete
with others from around the World means a great deal to them.
They are given a renewed sense of hope, a new life, when they
read about their success."

"I can't begin to tell you how much fun I had watching
Worlds Awards on my computer. I laughed, cheered
and even shed a few tears. Thank you for allowing us to
enjoy the Odyssey of the Mind experience along with
all of the winners in Colorado."
